 What to do Regarding Constipation
There may be a variety of causes for constipation. Bowel habits may vary widely but are still very necessary. If it has been longer than two or three days since your last bowel movement, notify your nurse. If you have not had a bowel movement in three days, use a laxative of choice, or try the following suggestions.
To avoid constipation, you should drink as much liquid as possible. Keep a glass of liquid at your side at all times, take sips often. Ice chips are also good to suck on. Jello and popsicles will add to your intake of liquids.
Milk products may be constipating to some people.
You may need to use these more often now than you did in the past. First try the laxative that has worked for you in the past. You may also try one of the following:
→ Warm liquids
→ Prune juice
→ Increase fiber in diet
→ Increase fresh fruit and vegetable intake
→ Increase fluid intake
→ Talk to your nurse about stool softeners, laxatives and suppositories, if changes to diet and adding liquids do not give relief.
Call Guardian Hospice if:
→ You have not had a bowel movement in 3 days.
→ You have loose, runny stools.
→ The medication to help constipation is not working.
→ You need reassurance.
