Serious illness can be both a crisis and an opportunity. There may be a desire to reflect on memories, joys and sorrows, regrets and accomplishments. Questions and concerns about faith, purpose, love, and forgiveness are common. Talking about your spiritual concerns, sharing your faith rituals, or reconnecting with traditions from your past can be helpful and may bring comfort. Our Spiritual Care Providers are trained to support all faiths. If you feel you or those close to you would benefit from this kind of support, talk with your Spiritual Care Provider about how they can help.
When a family member has a serious illness, children sense the changes and need to understand what is happening. Our Grief and Loss Support program includes experts in helping children and their families deal with illness and loss. Talk with your Hospice Social Worker or Spiritual Care Provider if you would like more information.
Caring for someone who is very ill can be physically and emotionally demanding.
In addition, some caregivers are often juggling other duties such as work, chores, caring for others in the family, or their own health needs. Caring for yourself may be challenging, but it is very important.
What You Can Do:
→ Take a deep breath several times a day. Deep breathing brings more oxygen to every cell and can refresh both body and mind.
→ Go outside for a few minutes, smell and feel the fresh air.
→ Take a walk or sit in your garden.
→ If you have an exercise routine, try to adhere to it. This can help decrease stress, and boost energy.
→ Lie down for 20 minutes or sit in a recliner with your feet up.
→ Drink plenty of liquids, especially water.
→ Eat a well-balanced diet at regular intervals.
→ Determine if visits are helpful or cause more stress. Know that it is okay to ask people to limit their visits. Talk to your Hospice Social Worker if you find this hard to do.
