McAdam’s Funeral Home in Fredericton and Oromocto Funeral Home in Oromocto are full service funeral service providers with deep roots in the community and a long-standing commitment to ensuring that those who rely on us find the help they need to address their unique circumstances and expectations.
As a locally-owned business and the longest serving funeral firm in the area, we are proud of our place in the community and honoured to carry on the extraordinary legacy handed down to us by some of our profession's finest practitioners.
Established in 1899 by James A. McAdam as one of Fredericton's first funeral homes, the business was originally located on Carleton Street. The firm would later occupy premises at 651 King Street before moving to our current location, in the former Vanbuskirk family residence at the corner of York & Brunswick Streets, in 1961.
Through three generations the business would remain in the McAdam family for 90 years. James’ sons Donald and Kenneth joined him and Ken became one of this region’s first formally trained embalmers. His grandson Walter would enter the profession in 1945, apprenticing with his Uncle Ken and eventually take over and run the funeral home until his retirement in 1989. With Walter’s retirement the funeral home passed into the hands of another New Brunswick family business, Brenan’s Funeral Homes of Saint John owned by the MacMackin family, and Ed Hamilton was appointed Managing Director.
In the years since, McAdam’s has continued to grow and evolve with the community it serves. An onsite crematorium was added – and recently updated – the York Street building was extensively renovated and a new, second location was added in nearby Oromocto in 1991 when the former Oromocto United Baptist Church was purchased and redeveloped to become the Oromocto Funeral Home.
The face of the firm for many years, Ed Hamilton would eventually become a full partner and president of the company. After surpassing 40 years in the profession, early in 2012 Ed made the decision to retire and sold his interest in the firm to his Assistant Managing Director Andrew Perry.
A Fredericton native, with more than twenty-five years’ experience in funeral service, Andrew has spent his entire career in the Fredericton area - the greatest part of it at McAdam's. The son of the Reverend Joyce and Sel Perry, Andrew is dedicated to his work and his community and looks forward to many more years of service to friends and neighbours at the helm of McAdam’s.
